Integrated Design Strategy for the City of Adelaide
Adelaide was successful in winning $1m from the Local Government Reform Fund to pilot an Integrated Design Strategy for the city of Adelaide.
Professor Laura Lee’s 2009 program highlighted the need to apply integrated design thinking through all tiers of South Australian government, education and industry. The application of this enabling process will result in improved urban quality, economic advantage and design consciousness, directly contributing to long term sustainability and improved quality of life for all South Australians. Applying integrated design thinking will also improve South Australia’s competitive positioning in the global context.
The Integrated Design Strategy (IDS) for Adelaide City proposes that the State Government and the Adelaide City Council develop a design-based vision and framework for Adelaide City. The primary goal of this proposal, emerging as a key recommendation from Professor Lee’s Residency, is to develop strategies that will improve the city character, making Adelaide more appealing, vibrant and desirable as a place to visit, live and work. An IDS is also vital for the realisation of many of the objectives of the State’s 30-year Plan for Greater Adelaide, guiding the ‘new urban form’ for Adelaide City. The Strategy will be developed over 2010/11
South Australian Commission for Integrated Design
On Proclamation Day 2009 the Premier announced plans for the establishment of a South Australian Commission for Integrated Design. The Commission will be structured to have an enabling and co-ordinating role, and will advise on how parties involved in design can better improve the quality of life of our cities and communities around the State through better design, and by fostering innovation.
