Media hub
In his final report Peter Wintonick recommended that the South Australian Government foster, finance and facilitate the creation of a screen industries and community Media Hub. In May 2008 the Government announced a $43m Adelaide Film and Screen Hub project to replace the SA Film Corporations (SAFC) outdated facilities. The one-stop-shop Hub will include SAFC, film sector tenants, production offices and production and post-production facilities.
Education
As a consequence of Peter’s recommendation, a taskforce was established to consider whether Higher Education Subject Status (HESS) of Media Studies should be changed from ‘Restricted’ to ‘General’ and, if so, to assist the Senior Secondary Assessment Board of SA (SSABSA) to implement the change. The Taskforce completed its work with SSABSA to redesign the curriculum and assessment framework to meet criteria for the HESS General Status, which was achieved - thereby facilitating improved participation by students in screen studies courses.
Why Democracy
The Department of Education and Children’s Services developed a Memorandum of Understanding with Dayzero Film Productions, South Africa, to ‘test-bed’ and develop a Facilitator’s Guide for 10 international films as part of ‘Why Democracy’ - a global documentary project. This work provided an opportunity to promote and develop digital screen and media literacy in our schools. The international films were shown across the globe in October 2007.
