Who is Alexandre Kalache
Dr Kalache’s expertise is in ageing issues – in particular old age care, epidemiology of ageing, health promotion, intersectoral policy development, advocacy, migration ageing, and cultural attitudes to ageing.
Dr Kalache has a wealth of experience and expertise at the international level through his work (1994-2008) as Director of the World Health Organisation (WHO) as an advocate for older people. During this time Dr Kalache advanced the state of knowledge about health care in older age and Gerontology through dissemination of information, training and research, launching in 2002 the WHO Active Ageing Policy Framework. Also under his leadership WHO launched the Global Movement on Age Friendly Cities.

Previously, Dr Kalache served as founder and head of the Epidemiology of Ageing Unit at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine where he also set up the first European Master's Degree Course on Health Promotion. From 1978-1984 Dr Kalache was a clinical lecturer at the Department of Community Health and Cancer Epidemiology at the Oxford University.
