The Challenge

The Challenge

How do we ensure that the new buildings and infrastructure, such as bridges, railways or trams we invest in will be environmentally sustainable, good looking and fit in to the surrounding environment? How do we increase the beauty and attractiveness of the city? How do we make it a more vibrant place to live?

Laura Lee’s residency focused on the value of integrated design and the effect of the built environment on the quality of life for South Australians.  She highlighted the need to elevate the importance of design in an integrated approach to developing a more vibrant and liveable built environment.

Laura asked ‘how can our communities and buildings play a proactive role in creating a healthier society?’
During her residency Laura worked very closely with universities, government, local government and the Australian Institute of Architects, making connections between design professionals, the building industry, planners and the public, and providing advice on future directions for integrated design in South Australia.

Laura collaborated with project teams on a number of major developments, giving guidance on innovative design approaches and processes that embed best design practice.

Laura Lee was in residence between March and October 2009.
