What is Integrated Design?

Design, as Professor Lee says is ‘a process, a way of thinking…a mode of thought’.

Integrated design is a way of creating spaces that generate experiences, spaces where people can feel a sense of belonging, identity and connection.  An integrated design process translates our hopes, needs and dreams of how we want to live and the experiences we want to have, into physical landscapes.

Integrated design is a holistic approach using a collaborative team process from beginning to end. This approach looks not only at individual buildings, their functionality and sustainability, but how people might move between the buildings.  It is what Professor Lee calls ‘the places and spaces in between’ that make cities enjoyable, sustaining places to be in.

An integrated design process starts with human needs and desires, and then incorporates economic viability and technical capabilities including sustainable features such as water, waste, recycling and energy generation.

By bringing together teams of architects, designers, engineers, construction professionals, transport planners and incorporating health, transport and water issues, integrated design approaches offer additional benefits streamlining planning and construction processes and costs through the inclusivity of this process.
